Logs in the Garden 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 from Virtual Quilter

Very formal garden!

Love the applique border in the second design, but a bit disappointed as I hoped that the soft colours of the Log Cabin blocks in the background would be more effective.

Like the extra flowers in the centre.

Now the Log Cabin part of the quilt is demanding attention! That’s more like what I was hoping for.

I think I will have some fun mixing up the formal garden with a heap of logs!

More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.

Lots of piecing, followed by lots of applique.

Love the design above.

I haven’t opened this project file for years, and the fabrics are dated, but I learned early on as a quilter that the colours don’t really matter if the contrast works. The contrast in this file isn’t perfect either, but the design is appealing despite that.

Sort of turned the design of the centre inside out and I still love it.

The four extra blocks with applique make it an even better design. I have decided not to spend hours changing the fabric choices in ...

Applique Logs 91, 92, 93, 94, 95 from Virtual Quilter

Middle of the week, and I suspect the middle of the year is travelling towards us faster than we would like. However, there will be a chance to have a short break mid week, every week, studying Log Cabin quilt designs.

The first two designs this week have exactly the same blocks, but 16 of them have been twisted around a bit.

In number three some extra applique has been added …

… and then the blocks with the extra applique are twisted inside out, …

… and the applique in those blocks was changed during the process.

Lots of light fabrics for the half light and half dark, and for the all light blocks, and a strong contrast for the dark fabrics … then add some applique … and then some quilting .

A lot more dark in the second design, but still plenty of spaces for some applique to be added.

I like the third, but I don’t think it would look great on a bed as part of the effect of the overall design would be lost over the edge of the bed.

The on above is my favourite for today.

Last one for this weeks coffee ...

I know it is not a weekend when a challenge may be set here on Virtual Quilts, but see if you can pick the changes between the five designs for this weeks mid week Log Cabin retreat.

I had to look hard to see them myself, so good luck!

Some of them could be passed off as mistakes.

Perhaps they were mistakes at the time, but I kept them to show that there are many ways, big and small to change a quilt design.

I think I like the first one best this week.

More Log Cabin designs next week ...

Applique Logs 77, 78, 79, 80 from Virtual Quilter

Some extra Log Cabin designs after having a brain fade and preparing an extra four designs after a visitor disrupted my morning yesterday. I like an excuse for an extra coffee break anytime, though perhaps the extra coffees shared with the visitor was a bit overboard.

Interesting shapes created by the Curved Log Cabin blocks in these designs, including the one above.

More interesting shapes, both above and below!

More Log Cabin designs mid week, next week.

Time for a short break to celebrate the middle of the week.

I would like the one above even without the applique.

Most of the appliques in this series are placed on individual blocks, but sometimes I have let the design expand over several blocks by setting them on Layer 2.

Changing the scale of parts of a design is a great way to add interest to designs.

More Log Cabin designs next week tomorrow … I got over enthusiastic and saved another four designs after being distracted by a visitor and before I had started to schedule this post!
